Bucs Swept in Season Opening Doubleheader

Josh Shelton went 3-for-3 with an RBI in the first game, but the Bucs were swept 8-4 and 11-2 by William Woods Saturday afternoon.
MEMPHIS—Visiting William Woods rapped out 23 hits and scored 19 runs as they swept a doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Bucs 8-4 and 11-2 Saturday afternoon in the season opener for both schools.

In the opener, the Owls (2-0) struck right away in the top of the first, scoring three runs on two singles and a two-run L.J. Watson homer.  The Bucs (0-2) scored their first run of the season in the bottom of the inning as Alan Wright (Memphis, Tenn., Christian Brothers HS) singled and scored on a Josh Shelton (Rosemark, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) single.

Garrett Oliver, who went 4-for-4 with three runs and two RBI, homered in the third to put the Owls in front 4-1, but the Bucs cut the margin back to two in the bottom of the inning as Wright scored on a groundout.  The Owls put it away with two runs in the fourth and fifth innings, and the Bucs set the final margin at 8-4 with two in the sixth.

Shelton went 3-for-3 for the Bucs in the opener, while Wright, Aaron Short (Cleveland, Tenn./Cleveland HS), and Yogi Vanaman (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) collected two hits each.  John Romo (Cordova, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) tossed two scoreless innings of relief for the Bucs.

In the second game, Cary Crain (Millington, Tenn./Millington HS) mowed down the first nine Owls, but William Woods scored 11 runs in the fourth through sixth innings to pull away.

The Bucs scored first as Joseph Kaminski (Sherwood, Ark./Little Rock Catholic HS) doubled to right and scored on a David Alan Wright (Olive Branch, Miss., DeSoto Central HS) sacrifice fly.  Wright would also drive in Kaminski for the Bucs' final run, in the bottom of the sixth, on a single.

In the middle, the Owls sent 26 men to the plate from the fourth through the sixth, batting around in the fourth and fifth innings.  Adam Wojciechowski hit a three-run single in the fourth to give them the lead for good at 4-1.  Brian Bishop's two-run homer in the sixth capped the Owls' scoring, collecting all 12 hits in the middle three innings.

Kaminski finished 2-for-3 with two runs in the second game, while Wright drove in two.

Weather permitting, the Bucs and Owls meet again for another seven-inning doubleheader tomorrow at noon.
