MEMPHIS—In a near-carbon copy of the second game of yesterday's doubleheader, visiting William Woods pulled away for a 10-1 win over the Christian Brothers University Bucs Sunday afternoon after the Bucs retired the first nine batters of the game.
This time for the Bucs (0-3), it was freshman
Alex Sikes (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) who retired the first nine he faced on three strikeouts and four groundouts. The Owls (3-0) scored first on a pair of singles by Merrick Conway and Tyler Tamayose in the fourth. They would score in every inning the rest of the way. In yesterday's second game, an 11-2 WWU win,
Cary Crain (Millington, Tenn./Millington HS) retired the first nine he faced before the Owls' bats came alive in the fourth.
Matt Denney launched a two-run homer in the fifth, and L.J. Watson hit a two-run shot in the sixth to extend the lead to 5-0.
The Bucs scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Kyle Moore (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) drew a one-out walk and scored on a
Joseph Kaminski (Sherwood, Ark./Little Rock Catholic HS) single to right-center. The Owls tacked on two in the seventh and ninth innings and one in the eighth as they extended their lead to the 10-1 final score.
Sikes (0-1) allowed five runs, four earned, on four hits and no walks in six innings, striking out six in his first appearance for the Bucs. The Bucs were held to three hits, one each by Kaminski,
Matt Van Slyke (Oxford, Miss./Oxford HS), and
Chance Ruggeroli (Las Vegas, Nev./Shadow Ridge HS).
Denney went 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBI to lead the Owls, while Watson was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. WWU starter Tyler Anderson (1-0) threw five and a third innings, allowing one run on no hits and five walks.
Sunday's game was originally scheduled as a doubleheader, but it was changed to a single nine-inning game to allow the Owls to travel home earlier as another round of winter weather approaches the Mid-South.
The Bucs return to action Tuesday against Union. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. The Bucs visit Rhodes Wednesday at 2 p.m. before hosting a four-game weekend series against Robert Morris-Springfield Saturday and Sunday.
