JACKSON, Tenn.—Host Union scored twice in the first inning and never looked back as they rolled to a 10-2 win over the Christian Brothers University Bucs Thursday night at UU's Fesmire Field.
The Bulldogs (3-0) manufactured a pair of runs in the first with only one hit in the inning, a Danny Grimm leadoff double. They loaded the bases with a walk and a hit batter, and they pushed the runs across on a sacrifice fly and an error.
Grimm, who scored three times on the day, scored again in the third as he came home on a wild pitch after an infield single. Union pushed the lead to 4-0 when Josh Jones belted a solo homer to left in the fifth inning, and they doubled the lead to 8-0 with four runs in the sixth inning.
The Bucs (0-5) finally broke through with one out in the seventh.
Matt Van Slyke (Oxford, Miss./Oxford HS) started the rally with an infield single, and
Yogi Vanaman (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) drew a walk.
Alan Wright (Memphis, Tenn., Christian Brothers HS) smoked an RBI double to left to score Van Slyke, and
Josh Shelton (Rosemark, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) brought Vanaman home with an infield single. But the Bucs could score no more as they stranded a season-high 13 runners.
Wright and Shelton each went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Lee Paine (Oxford, Miss./Oxford HS) tossed an inning and two-thirds of scoreless relief, allowing a hit as he struck out a batter.
The Bucs return home this weekend for a four-game series against Robert Morris-Springfield. Seven-inning doubleheaders are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at noon.
