Couvion Celebrates Senior Night by Tying Career-High in 73-60 Win

CBU head coach Mike Nienaber presents Kyle Couvion with the game ball after the Bucs' 73-60 win over Southern Arkansas. The win made Couvion the school's all-time winningest player with 85 career wins.
Box Score MEMPHIS—Christian Brothers University senior guard Kyle Couvion (Dayton, Ohio, Centerville HS) celebrated Senior Night by tying his career high with 16 points as the Bucs rolled to a 73-60 Gulf South Conference West Division win over Southern Arkansas.

Couvion, who has made his mark at CBU (17-9, 7-6 GSC West) as a defender and passer, assumed the role of scorer early after being honored in a pregame ceremony, scoring the Bucs' first nine points on three layup sand a three-pointer.

After the first 16 minutes were hard fought with neither team leading by more than seven, the Bucs blew the game wide open with a 43-12 run from the 3:38 mark of the first half to the 6:24 mark of the second, when a Daniel Wulker (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller HS) layup put CBU up 63-27.  The Muleriders (9-17, 4-9) out-scored the Bucs' reserves 33-10 over the final 6:05 to cut the final score to 73-60.

Couvion, already CBU's career steal leader, became the school's all-time winningest player with his 85th career win.  He scored 16 points with four assists, four rebounds, one steal, and no turnovers in 29 minutes.  He will likely become CBU's career leader in minutes played Saturday at Arkansas Tech, as he trails first-place Clint Dowdle (2001-05) by just nine minutes.

Zack Warner (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton HS) and Kevin Doran (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) scored 15 points each for the Bucs, with Doran draining five three-pointers in 17 minutes off the bench.  Scott Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) had five points, nine rebounds, four assists, and four steals with no turnovers.

Sanchez Dade led SAU with 23 points and 13 rebounds, while Chase Spruiell added 11.

Despite the win, the Bucs' GSC Tournament hopes took a major hit Thursday night as Harding won 100-88 over second-place Delta State.  The Bucs enter the final game of the year tied with Harding for the final spot, and with Harding's win over DSU, the Bisons currently hold the tiebreaker due to having a win over third-place Arkansas-Monticello, which swept the Bucs.

Harding finishes at Ouachita Baptist Saturday, while the Bucs visit the NCAA's only undefeated men's team, No. 1 Arkansas Tech.  A CBU win would give the Bucs the tiebreaker advantage, while a loss would send Harding to the GSC Tournament as the West's No. 4 seed regardless of Harding's result at Ouachita Baptist.  Tip-off in Russellville is set for 6 p.m.
