MEMPHIS—Visiting Delta State moved back into third place in the Gulf South Conference West Division standings as they swept the Christian Brothers University Bucs 19-3 and 19-0 Saturday afternoon at Buc Field.
The Statesmen (17-8-1, 3-2 GSC West) exploded for 14 runs in the second inning of the opener, cashing in on six hits, four errors, four hit batters, and three walks.
The Bucs (4-22, 0-5) scored their first run of the day in the bottom of the second inning as David Alan Wright doubled to left and scored on a
Chance Ruggeroli (Las Vegas, Nev./Shadow Ridge HS) groundout.
After DSU tacked on two in the fifth and three in the sixth, the Bucs found the scoreboard again in the bottom of the sixth as Wright singled and
Josh Shelton (Rosemark, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) hit an RBI triple down the right field line.
Matt Van Slyke (Oxford, Miss./Oxford HS) singled in the seventh and scored on an error to set the final margin at 19-3.
Wright was 3-for-3 with two runs, and
Yogi Vanaman (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) went 2-for-4.
In the second game, DSU pitcher Jason Coats shut the Bucs down on just one hit in six innings with no walks and five strikeouts. Coats retired the last 16 he faced after an #Alfredo Arroyo double and an error that allowed Vanaman to reach.
DSU scored a run in the second and two in the third, and they blew it open with a nine-run fifth inning. They tacked on seven more in the seventh to set the final margin at 19-0.
Arroyo and Kaminski each singled in the seventh inning.
The Bucs and Statesmen meet again Sunday at 1 p.m.
