MEMPHIS—A nine-run seventh inning lifted visiting North Alabama to a 12-2 victory over the Christian Brothers University Bucs Wednesday afternoon at Buc Field, spoiling what had been a strong outing from sophomore righthander
Matt Ariemma (Bartlett, Tenn., St. Benedict HS).
The Bucs (4-23) struck first as
Matt Van Slyke (Oxford, Miss./Oxford HS) was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the first, and he came around to score on a two-out single by
Joseph Kaminski (Sherwood, Ark./Little Rock Catholic HS).
Ariemma followed by turning in one of his best starts at CBU. He only faced three batters over the minimum in the first five innings, allowing a third-inning run as UNA (15-13) catcher Kevin Williams singled, stole second, and scored on a Ross Parker single.
Two errors allowed a pair of two-out runs to score in the sixth, putting the Lions ahead 3-1. They broke it wide open in the seventh, finally solving Ariemma with a single, a double, and a walk in the seventh inning and finishing the inning with four singles, three doubles, and three walks before
Lee Paine (Oxford, Miss./Oxford HS), the third pitcher of the inning, put out the fire with the Bucs trailing 12-1.
Van Slyke hit an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to set the final margin, scoring
Caleb Burrow (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS), who had led off with a bloop single to right.
Ariemma finished with six runs allowed, four earned, in six and a third innings. He struck out two, walked two, and allowed seven hits. Five different Bucs collected singles.
The Bucs return to the field Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. as they host Union.
