RUSSELLVILLE, Ark.—Host Arkansas Tech swept a Gulf South Conference West Division doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Bucs Saturday, winning 27-6 in the first game and eking out a 6-5 comeback win in the nightcap.
In the first game, the Wonder Boys (24-11, 6-1 GSC West) put on a show offensively, blasting six home runs as they scored 27 runs on 20 hits, five walks, and three hit batters. ATU scored five runs in the second and fourth innings, six in the third, and 11 in the fifth as they built a 27-0 lead.
The Bucs (4-25, 0-7) scored once in the sixth and five in the seventh to set the final margin.
Yogi Vanaman (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, and a three-run homer as he scored twice and drove in three runs.
Anthony Apro (Lexington, Ky./West Jessamine HS) also hit a pinch-hit two-run homer in the seventh.
ATU right fielder Colt Loehrs had a game to remember, going 4-for-5 with a double and three homers, driving in nine runs and scoring four times. Loehrs hit two three-run homers in the fifth inning after hitting a two-run shot in the fourth.
In game two, the Bucs jumped out to a quick lead as
Alfredo Arroyo (San Antonio, Texas/James Madison HS) hit a leadoff homer to left to start the game. The Bucs took a 2-0 lead an inning later as David Alan Wright drew a walk, moved to third on an Apro double, and scored on a
Caleb Burrow (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) sacrifice fly.
The Wonder Boys scored their first run in the second as Joe Walton hit a sacrifice fly to score Loehrs. Two hits and an error pushed ATU in front 3-2 in the third, taking the lead on a Nick Makris RBI single.
The Bucs took the lead back in the fifth when
Josh Shelton (Rosemark, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) hit a two-out two-run double, but Clint Stroud answered with a two-run double of his own for ATU in the bottom of the fifth to put ATU back in front
Another Burrow sacrifice fly knotted the game in the top of the sixth, but Chad Wynn's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth proved to be the game-winner for ATU.
Arroyo and Shelton had two hits each for the Bucs, while Arroyo and Wright scored twice. Burrow and Shelton each collected two RBI.
The Bucs and Wonder Boys meet again Sunday at 2 p.m. in the series finale. The Bucs' next home game is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m.
