MAGNOLIA, Ark.—No. 1 Southern Arkansas put on a show offensively Sunday afternoon, pounding out 18 hits, including four home runs, as they cruised to a 22-5 victory over the Christian Brothers University Bucs, remaining undefeated in Gulf South Conference West Division play.
After the Bucs (5-34, 1-13 GSC West) took a 1-0 first-inning lead on three straight singles by
Matt Van Slyke (Oxford, Miss./Oxford HS),
Aaron Short (Cleveland, Tenn./Cleveland HS), and David Alan Wright, the Muleriders (35-3, 14-0) went to work offensively, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first on four walks, three singles, and a three-run homer by Logan Williams, who also hit a homer later in the game.
The Bucs scored again in the second as Short hit an RBI double to bring
Tyler Dunn (Bartlett, Tenn./Tipton-Rosemark Academy) home after he reached on a fielder's choice, but again SAU answered in a big way with three unearned runs in the bottom of the inning.
Chance Ruggeroli (Las Vegas, Nev./Shadow Ridge HS) drew a leadoff walk and scored on a
Brent Ariemma (Bartlett, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) groundout in the fourth inning to cut the lead to 8-3, but SAU put it out of reach in the bottom of the inning as they scored 10 runs on eight hits, two errors, a walk, and a hit batter.
The Muleriders extended the lead to 22-3 with a four-run sixth before the Bucs scored two runs on a two-out
Yogi Vanaman (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) home run in the top of the seventh.
The Bucs finish the season with eight straight home games, beginning Tuesday at 1 p.m. against LeMoyne-Owen.
