MEMPHIS—Union pitchers Brad Davis and David Leisey combined for a five-hit shutout as the Bulldogs won 8-0 over the Christian Brothers University Bucs Wednesday afternoon at Buc Field.
Union (29-8) scored their first runs in the third inning on a Danny Grimm single and back-to-back doubles from Corey Rudolph and Beau Baker. Baker scored on an error to make the margin 3-0.
The Bulldogs used two doubles and a single to score twice in the seventh. They tacked on one in the eighth and two in the ninth to set the final margin.
Davis kept the Bucs (5-35) off balance all game, throwing eight and two-third scoreless innings as he allowed five hits, three walks, and two hit batters while striking out 12. Leisey retired the game's final batter on a flyout to finish the shutout.
Aaron Short (Cleveland, Tenn./Cleveland HS) doubled for the Bucs, while
Matt Van Slyke (Oxford, Miss./Oxford HS),
Yogi Vanaman (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS),
Anthony Apro (Lexington, Ky./West Jessamine HS), and
Chance Ruggeroli (Las Vegas, Nev./Shadow Ridge HS) each singled.
The Bucs return to Gulf South Conference West Division play Saturday as they host a noon doubleheader against Henderson State. The Bucs and Reddies meet again Sunday at 1 p.m.
