MEMPHIS—Visiting Henderson State moved closer to clinching the West Division No. 4 seed in next month's Gulf South Conference Tournament as they rolled to a 10-3 win over the Christian Brothers University Bucs Sunday afternoon at Buc Field.
The Reddies (27-15, 9-8 GSC West) took control right away with three unearned runs in the first inning. They tacked on four in the fourth to make the lead a commanding 7-0 margin.
Meanwhile, HSU pitcher Anthony Gilliland (3-1) dominated on the mound, holding the Bucs hitless through the first four innings.
Chance Ruggeroli (Las Vegas, Nev./Shadow Ridge HS) broke up the no-hitter in the bottom of the fifth as he blasted a towering homer to left-center to start the inning to put the Bucs (5-38, 1-16) on the scoreboard.
After HSU scored two runs in the sixth and one in the eighth, the Bucs scored two more in the bottom of the eighth to set the final margin as
Alan Wright (Memphis, Tenn., Christian Brothers HS) and
Caleb Burrow (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) walked and then scored on back-to-back two-out RBI singles by
Anthony Apro (Lexington, Ky./West Jessamine HS) and Ruggeroli.
Ruggeroli went 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI for the Bucs, accounting for three of their five hits. Apro and Wright also added singles.
Gilliland finished with 11 strikeouts against two walks and three hits over seven innings.
The Bucs will close out the season next weekend as they host a three-game set with Ouachita Baptist. Saturday's doubleheader will start at noon, with Senior Day set for Sunday's 1 p.m. game. The Bucs' game with LeMoyne-Owen that was postponed last week will not be made up.
