Tigers Sweep Bucs To End Season

Anthony Apro collected three hits, including a two-run homer, on Senior Day as the Bucs were swept 16-5 and 14-4 by Ouachita Baptist.
MEMPHIS—Visiting Ouachita Baptist swept a Gulf South Conference West Division doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Bucs in the final games of the season for both schools Sunday afternoon, winning 16-5 in the opener and taking a 14-4 win in the second game.

In the opener, the Tigers (24-23, 8-11 GSC West) struck first on a Duncan Collins RBI single in the top of the second.  The Bucs (5-40, 1-18) took their only lead of the day in the bottom of the second as Joseph Kaminski (Sherwood, Ark./Little Rock Catholic HS) was the first of three Buc seniors to homer on Senior Day with a leadoff shot to left.  Anthony Apro (Lexington, Ky./West Jessamine HS) singled and scored on an Alan Wright (Olive Branch, Miss./DeSoto Central HS) single to give the Bucs a 2-1 lead.

The Tigers took the lead back for good in the top of the third as they scored five runs on two singles, a walk, a hit batter, and a Luke Hardcastle grand slam.

The Bucs chipped away at the lead in the next two innings, pulling within two runs when Apro blasted a two-run homer to center after a Yogi Vanaman (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) walk.  They cut the lead to 6-5 in the fourth inning when Aaron Short (Cleveland, Tenn./Cleveland HS) singled and scored on a Kaminski groundout in the bottom of the fourth.

The Tigers put the game out of reach in a hurry in the top of the fifth as 10 straight batters reached safely to start the inning, and all came around to score.  In all, the Tigers scored 10 runs on five hits, four walks, a hit batter, and an error.  Third baseman Kyle Zimmerman blasted a three-run homer to left in the inning.

Neither team scored in the final two innings.  Apro went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.  Wright collected two hits, while Kaminski drove in two runs.

In the second game, OBU blitzed the Bucs for five runs in the top of the first inning on three hits, a hit batter, an error, and two sacrifices.  They tacked on two in the third and four in the fourth to take a commanding 11-0 lead on a Zimmerman grand slam.

The Bucs broke up the shutout bid in the fourth inning.  Vanaman doubled to left, and he scored on a Kaminski single to center.  Three batters later, Stephany homered to right-center, becoming the third player to homer on his Senior Day.

After OBU scored a run in the fifth and sixth innings, the Bucs scored their final run of the season as Cody Dunn (Bartlett, Tenn./Tipton-Rosemark Academy) tripled to right field to score Stephany, who was hit by a pitch.

Kaminski and Dunn each went 2-for-3, while Stephany scored twice and drove in a pair of runs.

The Bucs honored nine players in pregame Senior Day ceremonies: Apro, David Clayton (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS), Dunn, Kaminski, Chance Ruggeroli (Las Vegas, Nev./Shadow Ridge HS), Josh Shelton (Rosemark, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS), Stephany, Jason Volpe (Germantown, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS), and Wright.
