SEARCY, Ark.—The Christian Brothers University Bucs scored three or more runs in five different innings, including a three-run ninth, as they snapped a long losing streak with a come-from-behind 18-16 win at Harding Saturday, their first Gulf South Conference West Division win of the season.
The Bucs (5-29, 1-10 GSC West) started what would be a big day as
Joseph Kaminski (Sherwood, Ark./Little Rock Catholic HS) hit a two-run double to left and scored on an error.
Josh Shelton (Rosemark, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) started the Bucs' offense with a two-out double to right, and
Yogi Vanaman (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) followed with a walk.
The Bisons (19-18, 5-6) scored four times in the third inning as they batted around on two doubles, four walks, and a hit batter.
The Bucs retook the lead with three in the fourth inning.
Chance Ruggeroli (Las Vegas, Nev./Shadow Ridge HS) hit a one-out single to start the rally.
Caleb Burrow (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) drew a walk, and
Matt Van Slyke (Oxford, Miss./Oxford HS) hit a single to left, allowing Ruggeroli to score on an error. A groundout and another error pushed two more runs across, giving the Bucs a 6-4 lead.
The Bisons tied it up with a pair of fifth-inning runs, but Vanaman put them back in front in the top of the sixth. The Bucs loaded the bases with one out on singles by
Alfredo Arroyo (San Antonio, Texas/James Madison HS) and
Aaron Short (Cleveland, Tenn./Cleveland HS) as well as a Shelton walk. Vanaman hit a three-run double to right and scored on an error and a wild pitch.
The Bisons tied it again in the bottom of the inning, scoring four runs as they batted around on five walks, a single, and an error.
An RBI double by Arroyo put the Bucs back in front and the fifth, and they loaded the bases again for Vanaman, who blasted a grand slam to right-center to give the Bucs a 15-10 lead going into the seventh-inning stretch.
The Bisons took the lead yet again in the bottom of the eighth, batting around for the third time in the game on two walks, three singles, a double, and a triple to take a 16-15 lead into the ninth.
The Bucs would answer yet again in the ninth. Arroyo hit a one-out single, and Short, who finished the eighth inning on the mound, drew a walk. Vanaman loaded the bases with a two-out infield single. Kaminski legged out another infield single to tie the game, and a throwing error allowed Short and Vanaman to score the game-winning runs.
Short (1-1) mowed down the Bisons in order in the ninth to preserve the win.
Vanaman led the way for the Bucs offensively, going 3-for-4 with four runs and seven RBI. Arroyo was 3-for-6 with three runs, while Short and Shelton also scored three runs each. Kaminski was 2-for-6 with three RBI, while Van Slyke went 2-for-4. Burrow also scored twice.
The Bucs visit North Alabama Tuesday at 3 p.m. before they return home Wednesday at 4 p.m. against Rhodes. They play at LeMoyne-Owen Thursday at 2 p.m. before finishing the week with a GSC West series at first-place Southern Arkansas.
