MEMPHIS—For the second game in as many days, the Christian Brothers University Bucs rallied to tie the game an inning from completion, but they took another one-run loss, this time 5-4 against Rhodes Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference game shortened to seven innings due to darkness and approaching rain.
The Lynx (21-9) struck first with a two-run Travis Perkins single in the second inning, and they added a run to the lead in the third as Chris Conkell singed home Matt Gilbert, who had singled and stolen second and third.
Matt Stephany (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) put the Bucs (5-31) on the board in the bottom of the fifth as he blasted a towering leadoff homer to left-center, his first of the season and the second of his career.
After Rhodes scored another run in the top of the sixth, the Bucs tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Yogi Vanaman (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) started the inning with a single through the left side, and
Joseph Kaminski (Sherwood, Ark./Little Rock Catholic HS) blasted a double to the fence in center. Kaminski scored on an error, and Stephany hit an RBI double to left field to score
Caleb Burrow (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS), who had reached on the error, for the tying run.
The Lynx scored the eventual game-winner quickly in the seventh, however. Gilbert walked and stole second, and he scored on an Austin Marcum base hit. Hunter Chandler retired the Bucs in order in the bottom of the seventh to pick up the save, as the game was called due to darkness.
Vanaman went 3-for-4, while Kaminski and Stephany each went 2-for-3. Stephany drove in two runs.
The Bucs' game scheduled at LeMoyne-Owen tomorrow afternoon has been moved to Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m., and it will be played at Buc Field. The Bucs return to action in a three-game GSC West series at No. 1 Southern Arkansas this weekend. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 3 p.m., with a single game Sunday at 2 p.m.
