Box Score LIVINGSTON, Ala.—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs dropped a five-set heartbreaker at West Alabama Friday night, but they wrapped up the No. 3 seed in next weekend's Gulf South Conference Tournament in the process.
The Lady Bucs (23-9, 9-4 GSC) took the lead early in the match, scoring five straight points to end the first set with a 25-23 win. West Alabama (21-10, 9-5) never trailed in the second set, winning 25-17, but the Lady Bucs again took control by scoring the last five points to win 25-18 in the third set. After the fourth set was tied as late as 18-18, the Tigers scored seven of the last 10 points to stay alive in the match, winning the set 25-21. In the decisive fifth set, the Lady Bucs were within one point as late as 9-8 and within two points as late as 13-11 before UWA finished the match with two straight points.
Corinne Doder (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) collected a season-high 35 digs for the Lady Bucs, two off her career high set against Southern Arkansas in 2009.
Kelsey Miles (Cordova, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) had 42 assists, while
Hailey Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) led the offense with 15 kills.
Hannah Kurtz (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) logged 12 kills, and
Kelly Nolan (St. Louis, Mo./Rosati-Kain HS) added 11.
Hillary Lobenstein paced UWA with 18 kills, followed by 16 from Angela Sanders and 11 from Chanel Davis. Alexis McHale collected 55 assists, and Casey Byrnes added a team-high 26 digs.
The Lady Bucs clinched the No. 3 seed in the GSC Tournament despite the loss. If the Lady Bucs win tomorrow's regular season finale at Alabama-Huntsville, they would finish in third place outright. With a loss, they would be tied with UWA, but the Lady Bucs would win the tiebreaker by virtue of winning five sets to three in the two matches combined against UWA, as the Lady Bucs won in three sets at Canale Arena last month.
By winning at New Orleans Friday night, Valdosta State will be seeded fifth, so the Lady Bucs will take on sixth-seeded UAH again in the GSC Tournament's first round. The regular season finale between the two schools will be Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m., and the GSC Tournament matchup is set for Friday, Nov. 11, with the time to be announced early next week.
