Bucs Strike Out 16 in 5-2 Win

Cary Crain struck out 11 batters in five scoreless innings as the Bucs won 5-2 over William Woods Sunday afternoon.
Box Score MEMPHIS—Christian Brothers University junior pitchers Cary Crain (Millington, Tenn., Millington HS) and Jon-Michael Davis (Bartlett, Tenn., Bartlett HS) combined to strike out 16 batters, the Bucs' most strikeouts in over 40 years, in a 5-2 win over William Woods Sunday afternoon to give the Bucs a 2-1 series victory in the first series of the season for both teams.

Crain set the tone early, striking out four batters in the top of the first, as one reached on a wild pitch.  He fanned 10 of the first 13 batters he faced, finishing with 11 as he allowed just one hit and one walk in five innings.  Davis picked up where Crain left off, striking out five of the first seven batters he faced.

After six scoreless innings, the Bucs' bats broke out in the seventh inning.  Aaron Short (Cleveland, Tenn./Cleveland HS) doubled to left-center to start the inning, and Rob Maxwell (Jackson, Tenn./North Side HS) singled to short.  After Maxwell stole second, a one-out double to center from Brent Goode (Jackson, Tenn./North Side HS) plated two runs.  Goode came home on an error after a Jimmy Franklin (Knoxville, Tenn./Powell HS) bunt single, giving the Bucs a 3-0 lead.  A bases-loaded walk by Yogi Vanaman (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) brought in another run, and a Lans Hardin (Keystone Heights, Fla./Keystone Heights HS) RBI groundout gave the Bucs (2-1) a five-run cushion.

The Owls (1-2) used a pair of two-out singles followed by an LJ Watson double to score two runs in the top of the eighth, but Davis kept them off the scoreboard in the ninth to earn the victory.

Davis allowed two runs on three hits in four innings with five strikeouts, while Crain whiffed 11 in five scoreless innings.  The Bucs' 16 strikeouts were one shy of the school record, set when Bill Brown mowed down 17 batters against Union March 30, 1969.

Franklin and Alfredo Arroyo (San Antonio, Texas/James Madison HS) each went 3-for-4 for the Bucs at the plate.

The Bucs return to the field Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. as they host North Alabama.
