Box Score MEMPHIS—Visiting North Alabama used a six-run fifth inning and a four-run seventh to pull away for an 11-5 win over the Christian Brothers University Bucs Tuesday afternoon at Buc Field.
The Lions (6-1) scored an unearned run in the first inning as Jared Mothershed reached on a two-out single and came home on a pair of throwing errors.
The Bucs (2-2) answered in the bottom of the second with a two-out two-run single from
Caleb Burrow (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS).
Jimmy Franklin (Knoxville, Tenn./Powell HS) doubled to right-center to start the third inning, and he scored on an
Alfredo Arroyo (San Antonio, Texas/James Madison HS) single to give the Bucs a 3-1 lead.
CBU starter
Jake Garbuzinski (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) cruised through the first four innings of his first career start, only allowing two singles and two walks. He ran out of gas in the fifth, however, as the Lions used a single, a double, a walk, a hit batter, and a three-run homer to score five runs. They tacked on another run against the bullpen after a bases-loaded hit batter to take a 7-3 lead.
Lans Hardin (Keystone Heights, Fla./Keystone Heights HS) hit an RBI double to center in the bottom of the fifth, scoring
Yogi Vanaman (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) after a two-out walk, and Franklin scored again in the sixth when he reached on a two-out bunt single and came home on a
Will Wilson (Cordova, Tenn./First Assembly Christian School) double.
The Lions wrapped up the scoring in the top of the seventh, however, cashing in three hits, a walk, and an error for a four-run inning to set the final margin at 11-5.
Franklin went 2-for-5 with two runs, and Burrow was 2-for-4 with a two RBI for the Bucs.
Aaron Short (Cleveland, Tenn./Cleveland HS) allowed one run in three innings of relief, allowing three hits and striking out four.
The Bucs return to the field this weekend when they host Loyola-New Orleans for a three-game set. Saturday's doubleheader starts at noon, with a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
