Big Inning Pulls Bucs Through, 6-4

Matt Ariemma allowed one run in five innings as he earned his first win of the season in the Bucs' 6-4 win over Edgewood Thursday afternoon.
MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Bucs scored five runs in the fourth inning en route to a 6-4 win over visiting Edgewood Thursday afternoon at a chilly Buc Field.

The Bucs (11-3) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Alfredo Arroyo (San Antonio, Texas/James Madison HS) doubled and scored on a Yogi Vanaman (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) hit.  After the Eagles (0-1) answered with a run of their own in the top of the second, the Bucs stranded two runners in the second and left the bases loaded in the third.

In the fourth, Arroyo finally broke the skid.  Jake Williams (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) started the inning with a single to right-center.  A hit batter and a Will Wilson (Cordova, Tenn./First Assembly Christian School) bunt single loaded the bases, and Jimmy Franklin (Knoxville, Tenn./Powell HS) hit an RBI single to right-center to break the tie.  Arroyo blasted a three-run double to left to give the Bucs a 5-1 lead, and he scored on a Lans Hardin (Keystone Heights, Fla./Keystone Heights HS) single to center to push the edge to 6-1.

The Eagles scored a pair of runs in the eighth on two hits and an error, and they scored once in the ninth on a walk and two singles, before Matt Wigington (Hernando, Miss./Hernando HS) struck out the last two batters to nail down his first save.

Arroyo and Vanaman each went 2-for-4 to lead the Bucs' offense.  Matt Ariemma (Bartlett, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) allowed one run on two hits and two walks in five innings as he earned the victory.  Mitch Porwoll (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian HS) also tossed two scoreless frames of relief.

The Bucs play their final non-conference weekend series this weekend when they welcome Lewis to Buc Field.  Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for a noon start, with a single game Sunday afternoon at 1.
