Bisons Sweep Bucs in GSC West Opener

Yogi Vanaman went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in the Bucs' 9-2 loss at Harding Saturday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader. Harding won the second game 4-0.
SEARCY, Ark.—Host Harding swept a doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Bucs Saturday afternoon in the first Gulf South Conference West Division series of the year for both teams, winning the opener 9-2 before blanking the Bucs 4-0 in the second game.

In the opener, the Bisons (22-4, 2-0 GSC West) scored six unearned runs, including three in the bottom of the first inning after a pair of two-out errors extended the inning to allow a pair of hits to give them all the run support starter Ryan Modglin would need.

The Bucs (14-7, 0-2) found the scoreboard in the top of the fourth when Yogi Vanaman (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) doubled and came around to score on a Rob Maxwell (Jackson, Tenn./North Side HS) hit.  The Bisons tacked on another run in the bottom of the inning to reclaim their three-run cushion, and they tacked on two more in the bottom of the fifth.

The Bucs' other run came in the eighth inning courtesy of four straight singles, with Lans Hardin (Keystone Heights, Fla./Keystone Heights HS) driving Jimmy Franklin (Knoxville, Tenn./Powell HS) home.  The Bisons added three in the bottom of the eighth to set the final margin at 9-2.

Vanaman, Hardin, and Alfredo Arroyo (San Antonio, Texas/James Madison HS) had two hits each for the Bucs.

In the second game, Harding starter Brodie Brumley dazzled, holding the Bucs to just three baserunners -- Aaron Short (Cleveland, Tenn./Cleveland HS) singles in the second and seventh innings, with Jake Williams (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) reaching on an error in the fifth.

Paul Anzalone scored the only run Brumley would need, legging out a bunt single in the bottom of the third and scoring on a Chase Presley single.  A two-run homer for Presley in the fifth inning and a Jeremy Bohnett solo shot in the sixth set the final margin.

The Bucs and Bisons meet again tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. to wrap up the three-game set.
