MEMPHIS—Bethel batted around in two different innings as they cruised to a 17-0 win over the Christian Brothers University Bucs Tuesday afternoon at AutoZone Park.
The Wildcats (14-10-2) scored twice in the first inning on a two-out error with the bases loaded to take the lead, and they blew it open an inning later. In the second, the Wildcats plated six runs on three singles, a hit batter, an error, and a three-run Jonathan DeBerry homer as they took a commanding 8-0 lead.
They tacked on three more in the fifth, and a six-run sixth inning was capped when DeBerry hit a grand slam onto the Bluff in left field to set the final margin at 17-0.
Meanwhile, Bethel starter Jacob Hatchel stymied the Bucs' bats, holding CBU (14-9) to a fourth-inning
Yogi Vanaman (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) single in his six innings, also allowing four walks and a hit batter.
Aaron Smith (Lewisburg, Miss./Lewisburg HS) provided the Bucs' other hit as he launched a pinch-hit double to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning, but he was stranded on third base, one of six runners the Bucs left on in the game.
The Bucs return to action this weekend as they welcome Henderson State to Buc Field for a Gulf South Conference West Division series. Saturday's doubleheader starts at noon, with a single game set for 1 p.m. Sunday.
