MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Bucs built a four-run lead by capitalizing on mistakes, but visiting Henderson State scored eight runs in the final four innings as they rallied for a 10-6 win over the Bucs Saturday afternoon on a cold, wet day at Buc Field.
The Reddies (11-11, 2-2 GSC West) struck first in the top of the second inning, scoring twice on a walk, a pair of singles, and a wild pitch. In the bottom of the inning, the Bucs answered as
Lans Hardin (Keystone Heights, Fla./Keystone Heights HS) hit a leadoff single and
Yogi Vanaman (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) followed with a walk.
Rob Maxwell (Jackson, Tenn./North Side HS) laid down a bunt single, and a pair of throwing errors on the play allowed all three to score, giving the Bucs a 3-2 edge.
The Bucs (14-10, 0-4) capitalized on a single, an error, and a pair of wild pitches to push two more runs across in the third, and they took a 6-2 lead in the fourth inning as
Jimmy Franklin (Knoxville, Tenn./Powell HS) singled
Aaron Short (Cleveland, Tenn./Cleveland HS) home.
The Reddies took the lead for good in the top of the sixth inning. Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases with none out, but the Bucs appeared on the verge of getting out of the inning with the lead ater a sacrifice fly and a groundout put two on and two out with two runners in. A walk loaded the bases, however, and Gip Hendrix hit a bases-clearing triple into the right field corner that stayed just fair to give the Reddies the lead.
Kendall Norman doubled and scored on a wild pitch in the seventh, and he set the final margin in the ninth inning with a two-run double into the right-field corner.
Brent Goode (Jackson, Tenn./North Side HS) paced the Bucs' offense, going 3-for-5 in the game.
The Bucs and Reddies meet again Sunday at noon for a doubleheader.
