Weevils Sweep Bucs 17-12, 14-6

Jimmy Franklin scored five runs, stole three bases, and hit his first homer of the year as the Bucs were swept 17-12 and 14-6 at Arlansas-Monticello Saturday.
MONTICELLO, Ark.—Host Arkansas-Monticello swept a Gulf South Conference West Division doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Bucs Saturday afternoon, winning the opener 17-12 before claiming a 14-6 win in the second game.

In the opener, the Bucs (14-21-1, 0-13-1 GSC West) took an early lead as Jimmy Franklin (Knoxville, Tenn./Powell HS) singled, stole second and third, and came home on a Rob Maxwell (Jackson, Tenn./North Side HS) double.  The Weevils (15-19, 5-9) tied it with a run on a passed ball in the bottom of the second, but the Bucs took a commanding lead with four runs in the third on a walk, an error, and doubles from Yogi Vanaman (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) and Lans Hardin (Keystone Heights, Fla./Keystone Heights HS), followed by an Alan Wright (Olive Branch, Miss./DeSoto Central HS) RBI single.

The Weevils would answer with the long ball.  A pair of solo shots in the fifth cut the lead to 5-3, but Franklin belted his first homer of the season, a two-run shot, in the top of the sixth to give the Bucs a 7-3 lead.

UAM used a three-run homer and a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth to take a 10-7 lead before the Bucs cut it back to a one-run margin in the top of the seventh with two runs on two hits, a walk, a hit batter, and a sacrifice fly.

IN the bottom of the seventh, the Weevils scored another run on a throwing error on a stolen base, but a Vanaman double scored Franklin in the eighth to cut the lead to one run a final time.  UAM put it out of reach in the bottom of the eighth with six runs on four singles, a homer, three walks, and a hit batter.

The Bucs tacked on two to set the final margin in the top of the ninth with a pair of bases-loaded hit batters.

Franklin went 2-for-4 with two RBI, three steals, and four runs in the game, while Hardin, Maxwell, Vanaman, and Caleb Burrow (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) collected two hits each.  Vanaman drove in four.

The Weevils continued their hot hitting in the second game, scoring three first-inning runs on two walks and two singles.  In the second, they plated four runs on four singles and two doubles to extend their lead to 7-0 before the Bucs scored two in the top of the third on a Will Wilson (Cordova, Tenn./First Assembly Christian School) walk, a Franklin single, an error, and a Hardin RBI single.

The Weevils scored on a bases-loaded walk in the third before the Bucs would cut into the lead in the top of the fourth.  Tyler Dunn (Bartlett, Tenn./Tipton-Rosemark Academy) hit a leadoff triple.  Caleb Burrow (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) followed with an RBI double and scored on a Wilson single, cutting the UAM lead to 8-4.

The Weevils put it out of reach in the bottom of the frame with five runs on a single, two hit batters, and three doubles.  Hardin doubled and scored on a Wright sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth for the Bucs.

In the bottom of the sixth, UAM tacked on another run on a hit batter, a walk, and a single, and the Bucs set the final score in the top of the seventh when Hardin doubled and scored on an error.

Dunn and Hardin each went 3-for-5 in the game for the Bucs.

The Bucs and Weevils meet again Sunday at 1, and the Bucs come home Monday afternoon for 3 p.m. game against Bethel, their final non-conference home game of the season.
