HENDERSON, Tenn.—Host Freed-Hardeman won the first game of a scheduled doubleheader with the Christian Brothers University Bucs Tuesday night before game two was rained out in the fifth inning.
In the opener, the Lions (25-25) scored in each inning on their way to a 13-4 win, starting wtih two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first.
The Bucs (15-26-1) scored their first run of the day in the top of the second inning as
Brent Goode (Jackson, Tenn./North Side HS) walked and scored on a
Caleb Burrow (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) single.
FHU tacked on two more runs in the second and one each in the third and fourth innings to take a 6-1 lead. The Bucs shaved two off the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Three straight singles from
Charles Armour (Brighton, Tenn./Brighton HS),
Jimmy Franklin (Knoxville, Tenn./Powell HS), and
Will Wilson (Cordova, Tenn./First Assembly Christian School) loaded the bases with none out. A wild pitch and a douple play pushed Armour and Franklin across the plate to cut the lead to 6-3.
The Lions put it out of reach in the bottom of the inning, however, scoring five runs on six consecutive one-out hits. After FHU scored twice more in the sixth, the Bucs set the final margin in the top of the seventh with a run on consecutive singles from Franklin, Wilson, and
Rob Maxwell (Jackson, Tenn./North Side HS).
Wilson went 4-for-4 in the game, while Franklin was 2-for-4 with two runs.
The Bucs wrap up their 2011 schedule this weekend as they host Ouachita Baptist for a three-game series. Saturday's doubleheader, marking the third annual Pirate Day, starts at noon, with a single game Sunday at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
