CLEVELAND, Miss.—Host Delta State pounded out 21 hits, including four home runs, as they topped the Christian Brothers University Bucs 16-6 Sunday afternoon to complete a sweep of their three-game Gulf South Conference West Division series.
The Statesmen (22-11, 8-1 GSC West) struck first in the bottom of the third inning, as Cameron Robulack hit a two-run homer to break up a scoreless tie. They blew it open an inning later, scoring six runs on five hits and two hit batters to take an 8-0 lead.
Rob Maxwell (Jackson, Tenn./North Side HS) put the Bucs (14-15-1, 0-8-1) on the board in the top of the sixth with a two-run homer after
Jimmy Franklin (Knoxville, Tenn./Powell HS) reached on a one-out single.
The Statesmen answered in the bottom of the sixth with a run on two hits and a walk, but the Bucs made a game of it in the top of the seventh. After singles from
Yogi Vanaman (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) and
Will Wilson (Cordova, Tenn./First Assembly Christian School), #Brent Goode blasted a three-run homer to cut the Delta lead to 9-4.
The Statesmen answered with three of their own in the bottom of the inning on a pair of home runs to take a 12-4 lead. In the eighth, Maxwell scored on an
Alan Wright (Olive Branch, Miss./DeSoto Central HS) hit, but the Statesmen scored four runs on five hits in the bottom of the eighth to end the game on the 10-run rule at 16-6.
Franklin, Vanaman, and
Tyler Dunn (Bartlett, Tenn./Tipton-Rosemark Academy) collected two hits each for the Bucs. Maxwell scored twice and drove in two, and Goode drove in three runs.
The Bucs return to the field Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. when they host a doubleheader against Bethel.
