RUSSELLVILLE, Ark.—Host Arkansas Tech claimed sole possession of first place in the Gulf South Conference West Division standings Saturday as they swept a doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Bucs, winning 15-4 in the opener and narrowly missing a no-hitter in a 10-3 game two win.
The Wonder Boys (22-13, 9-2 GSC West) scored in 11 of their 13 innings on the day, including all seven innings in the opener. They scored four in each of the first two innings to take a commanding eight-run lead early.
After ATU tacked on another run in the third, the Bucs (14-17-1, 0-10-1) got on the board in the top of the fourth.
Brent Goode (Jackson, Tenn./North Side HS) started the inning with a single, and
Jimmy Franklin (Knoxville, Tenn./Powell HS) reached on a single.
Rob Maxwell (Jackson, Tenn./North Side HS) followed with a two-run triple, and he scored on a
Yogi Vanaman (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) sacrifice fly.
Maxwell provided the Bucs' final run of the game as well when he blasted a homer to left in the top of the sixth to cut ATU's lead to 11-4. ATU scored one run for the fourth straight inning in the bottom of the sixth, and they ended it on a three-run Josh Riley homer in the bottom of the seventh.
Maxwell went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs for the game.
In game two, the Wonder Boys scored all the runs starter Danny Parker would need in the first inning, bringing in four on a homer, two walks, a single, and a double. Two singles, a walk, and a double brought three more in in the third inning. They tacked on another run in the fourth and two in the sixth to take a 10-0 lead into the game's final inning.
On the other side, Parker kept the Bucs baffled. He set down the first seven Bucs in order before a third-inning hit batter. The Bucs put three more runners on over the next two innings on two walks and an error, but Parker carried his no-hitter into the final inning.
After a leadoff walk, a force play and an infield popout brought him within an out of the GSC's first no-hitter of the season, but
Tyler Dunn (Bartlett, Tenn./Tipton-Rosemark Academy) broke it up as he lined a single to center.
Caleb Burrow (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) followed with a three-run home to left to break up the shutout as well, but reliever Ethan Crocker ended the game with a popout.
The Bucs and Wonder Boys meet again tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. The Bucs' next home game is set for 2 p.m. Tuesday against Freed-Hardeman.
