Bucs, Owls Split Sunday Twinbill

Josh Hopkins went 3-for-8 with two runs as the Bucs split a doubleheader with William Woods Sunday afternoon at Buc Field.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Bucs and visiting William Woods split a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Buc Field, with the Bucs winning 3-2 in the opener before the Owls won 5-3 in game two.

In the opener, the Owls (1-1) converted an error and three singles into a pair of two-out unearned runs in the top of the first inning to take an early lead.  In the bottom of the third, the Bucs (1-2) answered with three runs to take the lead.  Seth Cline (Cottontown, Tenn./Portland HS) reached on an error, and back-to-back doubles from Cody Warren (Orlando, Fla./Orangewood Christian HS) and Josh Hopkins (Olive Branch, Miss./Southern Baptist Educational Center) knotted the game.  After a strikeout, Braden Keathley (Henderson, Nev./Silverado HS) singled to center to push across Hopkins for what proved to be the game-winning run.

From there, neither team scored.  The Owls left the bases loaded in the fourth and stranded two runners in the ninth, but starter Alex Sikes (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) earned the win by allowing two unearned runs on four hits in five and a third innings.  Jon-Michael Davis (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) picked up his first save of the season with three and two-third scoreless innings of relief, scattering two hits and a walk.

Warren and Keathley each went 2-for-4 for the Bucs in the opener.

In the second game, the Owls again took an early lead in the top of the second on a double, a walk, and a pair of errors.  The Bucs scored in the second when Hunter Parham (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) singled to right and scored on a two-out error, and a bases-loaded walk to Brent Goode (Jackson, Tenn./North Side HS) scored Hopkins to tie the game in the third inning.  Each team scored once in the fourth, with the Owls stringing three singles together into a run and the Bucs answering with two walks, a sacrifice bunt, and a Jimmy Franklin (Knoxville, Tenn./Powell HS) RBI single.

The game remained in a 3-3 deadlock until the top of the sixth, when Owls designated hitter Brian Carr hit a two-out single and came home on a Jacob Harrison double.  They added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Damon Adrian reached on a two-out walk and came home on an error after Blake Wilson singled to right field.  Hopkins hit a one-out single for the Bucs in the seventh, but a strikeout and a groundout ended the game.

Hopkins went 2-for-4, and Parham was 2-for-2 in the game.  Keathley pitched six innings, allowing four runs, two earned, on seven hits and three walks.  Cary Crain (Millington, Tenn./Millington HS) allowed an unearned run in the seventh.

The Bucs and Owls are scheduled to meet again Monday afternoon at 1 p.m., weather permitting.  The Bucs will also face Harding Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. before hosting a three-game series with Northwestern Ohio next weekend.
