Toppers Edge Bucs 5-3

Josh Hopkins went 2-for-5, but the Bucs lost 5-3 to Blue Mountain Tuesday afternoon.
Box Score MEMPHIS—Visiting Blue Mountain scored the game's first four runs and held on for a 5-3 win over the Christian Brothers University Bucs Tuesday afternoon at Buc Field.

The Toppers (5-6) struck first with a pair of first-inning singles, and they added an insurance tally in the fourth inning when they converted three singles into a run.  In the fifth, Seth Kennedy blasted a one-out solo homer to center, and a walk led to a Dalton Kulas RBI double that gave them a 4-0 lead.

The Bucs (3-4) got on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning.  Ryan Logan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller HS) drew a leadoff walk.  After a Hunter Parham (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) single and a Cody Warren (Orlando, Fla./Orangewood Christian HS) walk, Jimmy Franklin (Knoxville, Tenn./Powell HS) hit an RBI single to left to give the Bucs their first run.

In the eighth, the Bucs pulled within a run.  Back-to-back singles gave a promising start to the inning, but Devan McClish (Dickson, Tenn./Dickson County HS) was tagged out trying to go from first to third on a single from Jake Williams (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS).  The out would prove costly, as Logan and Parham followed with walks to load the bases.  Brent Goode (Jackson, Tenn./North Side HS) hit a sacrifice fly to deep center, and the fly ball was dropped, allowing Williams and Logan to score and sending Parham to third.  A pair of popouts on the infield ended the threat.

The Toppers tacked on another run in the top of the ninth, scoring on a two-out wild pitch.  Josh Hopkins (Olive Branch, Miss./Southern Baptist Educational Center) smoked a leadoff double to center for the Bucs, but Topper pitcher Hunter Mize escaped the jam with three straight outs to earn the save.

Hopkins went 2-for-5 for the Bucs, and Logan scored twice as he drew two walks.

Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) made his first start at CBU, scattering seven hits and two walks over six innings.  He allowed four runs and struck out six.

The Bucs are back in action at Buc Field tomorrow at 1 p.m. when they host LeMoyne-Owen.
