Box Score 2 MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Bucs rallied for a 6-4 win in the second game of Saturday afternoon's doubleheader with Lindenwood after dropping a 3-2 heartbreaker in the first game.
In the second game, the Lions (5-6) used a pair of two-run innings to take a 4-0 lead. They started with two on three singles in the second inning, and they plated two more on two singles, a walk, and a sacrifice bunt in the fifth inning.
The Bucs (4-5) would answer in a big way in the bottom of the fifth.
Jake Williams (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) singled through the right side, and
Will Wilson (Cordova, Tenn./First Assembly Christian School) followed with a single to left-center. After
Tyler Dunn (Bartlett, Tenn./Tipton-Rosemark Academy) reached on an error,
Cody Warren (Orlando, Fla./Orangewood Christian HS) hit a sacrifice fly to center.
Josh Hopkins (Olive Branch, Miss./Southern Baptist Educational Center) drew a two-out walk to load the bases again, and pinch-hitter
Braden Keathley (Henderson, Nev./Silverado HS) launched a double off the fence in center field to clear the bases and tie the game.
Jake Garbuzinski (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) escaped a jam in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, Jeremy Koenig singled to center and moved up to third on a Wade Rothermich double. Dylan Lowery hit a sharp liner to third, but Williams snared the liner and beat Koenig to third base to double him off and end the inning.
With one out, Williams singled through the left side. Dunn reached on another error, and Warren singled off the fence in center to score both Williams and Dunn before he was tagged out trying to stretch the hit into a double.
Cary Crain (Millington, Tenn./Millington HS) pitched around a one-out double to pick up his first save of the season.
Williams went 3-for-3 in the game with two runs, and Dunn scored twice. Keathley and Warren drove in three runs each. Garbuzinski (1-0) allowed four runs on nine hits and two walks in six innings.
In the first game, the pitchers dominated for most of the day, with the game still scoreless going into the eighth inning. Colton Moore doubled to center and scored on a sacrifice fly to put the Lions on the board first in the top of the eighth. The Bucs answered in the bottom of the inning, starting with a Warren bunt single. A walk and a
Hunter Parham (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) single loaded the bases for
Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS), whose sacrifice fly tied the game.
In the top of the ninth, a leadoff error proved costly for the Bucs. A sacrifice bunt and a popout put two outs on the board, but a hit batter set the stage for a game-winning two-run double from Moore, who went 3-for-5 in the game.
The Bucs would answer in the bottom of the inning.
Alan Wright (Olive Branch, Miss./DeSoto Central HS) drew a leadoff walk, and Williams followed with a single. After a failed hit and run resulted in a strikeout and a runner caught stealing, Warren doubled off the fence in center to score
Brent Goode (Jackson, Tenn./North Side HS), who pinch-ran for Williams. But an infield popout ended the threat and gave the Lions the victory.
Williams and
Jimmy Franklin (Knoxville, Tenn./Powell HS) were both 2-for-4 in the game, and Warren went 3-for-5.
Alex Sikes (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) tossed seven and two-third innings, allowing one run on seven hits and three walks with six strikeouts.
The Bucs and Lions meet again Sunday for a single game. Sunday's first pitch has been moved to noon instead of the originally-scheduled 1 p.m. start.
