Wildcats Top Bucs 9-5 in Season Opener

Will Wilson scored twice and collected an outfield assist in the Bucs' 9-5 season-opening loss to Bethel Wednesday afternoon.
Box Score MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Bucs took an early three-run lead, but visiting Bethel scored nine straight runs on their way to a 9-5 win over the Bucs Wednesday afternoon in the season opener for both teams.

The Bucs (0-1) plated three runs in the bottom of the first on a walk, an error, two singles, and a double.  Hunter Parham (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) and Jake Williams (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) hit RBI singles, and Brent Goode (Jackson, Tenn./North Side HS) roped an RBI double but was thrown out at the plate trying to score a second run on Williams' single.

The Wildcats (1-0) answered with two runs in the second and a run in the third inning before the Bucs returned the favor by recording the third out when Lance Jarreld tried to score the go-ahead run on a Chase Pilkenton RBI double.  Pilkenton homered to center to lead off the sixth and put Bethel ahead for good, and the Wildcats tacked on two more runs in the inning to take a 6-3 lead.

Bethel added two more runs in the seventh and a run in the eighth to take a 9-3 lead.  Braden Keathley (Henderson, Nev./Silverado HS) made his CBU debut a memorable one, hammering a 1-2 pitch over the fence in right-center for a two-run homer to set the final margin.  The Bucs were unable to take advantage of three more baserunners in the final two innings.

Williams went 2-for-4 for the Bucs, while Will Wilson (Cordova, Tenn./First Assembly Christian School) scored twice.  Keathley, Matt Ariemma (Bartlett, Tenn./St. Benedict HS), and Alex Sikes (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) all tossed scoreless innings for the Bucs, and Jon-Michael Davis (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) tossed two innings while allowing one unearned run.

Pilkenton went 3-for-4 with four RBI to lead the Wildcats, and Jordan Stack also went 3-for-4.  Joey Wilder earned the win with two perfect innings out of the bullpen for the Wildcats.

The Bucs return to action this weekend as they host William Woods for a three-game series with a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday, beginning at noon each day.
