Box Score 2 MEMPHIS—Visiting Alabama-Huntsville used timely late-game hitting to claim a doubleheader sweep from the Christian Brothers University Bucs Saturday afternoon at Buc Field, winning the first game 7-3 and claiming a 5-0 win in the second game.
The Chargers (10-12, 3-2 GSC) took an early lead in the first game when Justin Pearson hit a leadoff double and scored on an Eric Deese single. The Bucs (6-12, 0-5) answered with two in the bottom of the second when
Braden Keathley (Henderson, Nev./Silverado HS) doubled and scored on a
Josh Hopkins (Olive Branch, Miss./Southern Baptist Educational Center) sacrifice fly.
Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) later scored on an error to put the Bucs in front. Hopkins homered to right in the fourth to give the Bucs a 3-1 lead, but they would not score again.
Pearson pulled teh Chargers within a run when he reached on a fielder's choice and scored in the top of the fifth, and the Chargers took the lead in the seventh inning when they scored four runs on three singles and two doubles. They tacked on an insurance run in the eighth when they scored on a passed ball.
Hopkins went 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Keathley and
Hunter Parham (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) collected two hits each.
In the second game, Keathley and UAH pitcher Dana Wright dominated, keeping the game scoreless into the sixth. With two out in the sixth, the Chargers finally broke through against Keathley, following a walk with two straight singles. An error allowed two more runs to score, extending the lead to 3-0. UAH added two more in the seventh on three singles and a double.
Wright held the Bucs scoreless on five singles and two walks.
Weather permitting, the Bucs and Chargers will meet again tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. to complete the series.
