Box Score MEMPHIS—Alabama-Huntsville pitchers David Kendrick and Cody Barrett combined for a nine-hit shutout as they completed a three-game sweep of the Christian Brothers University Bucs with a 5-0 win Sunday afternoon at Buc Field.
The Chargers (11-12, 4-2 GSC) scored the only run they would need in the top of the first inning when Justin Pearson hit a leadoff doubl and came home on a Justin Riddle single. Pearson provided the RBI single after a two-out Jon McKinney double in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 2-0.
A two-run single by Mike Love in the eighth inning extended the UAH lead to 4-0, and Pearson set the final margin in the top of the ninth when he scored on a Grant DeBruin double.
The Bucs' best chance to score was in the seventh inning, when
Josh Hopkins (Olive Branch, Miss./Southern Baptist Educational Center) led off with a double and moved to third on a
Brent Goode (Jackson, Tenn./North Side HS) single. Barrett came in out of the bullpen to put out the fire, inducing an infield popout and a double play to strand Hopkins on third.
Hopkins paced the CBU (6-13, 0-6) offense, going 3-for-4, and
Alan Wright (Olive Branch, Miss./DeSoto Central HS) went 2-for-3.
Jake Garbuzinski (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) took the loss for the Bucs, allowing four runs in seven and a third innings on nine hits with no walks and five strikeouts.
The Bucs have one midweek game on tap this week, when they host Illinois Wesleyan Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. The Bucs visit Valdosta State for a GSC series next weekend, with Saturday's doubleheader at 1 p.m. and Sunday's single game set for noon.
