Zack Warner (St. Louis, Mo., Clayton HS) scored a career-high 33 points to carry the No. 8 Christian Brothers University Bucs to a 60-57 win over sixth-seeded Eckerd in the NCAA Division II South Regional semifinals Sunday night as the Bucs tied the school record for wins in a season.
The game was nip-and-tuck throughout, as the game featured seven ties, nine lead changes, and no lead of more than five points for either team. The Tritons (21-9) took a 44-39 lead on a Josh Snodgrass layup with 12:15 remaining, but Warner answered with seven straight points to give the Bucs (25-6) their first lead since 21-19 midway through the first half.
A pair of Alex Bodney free throws put the Tritons ahead 53-51 with 4:55 remaining, but Warner found
Cory McArthy (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers College HS) for a three-pointer 23 seconds later to put the Bucs ahead for good. Warner followed with a layup, and
Scott Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) found
Harry Green (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) for a layup with 2:01 remaining to give the Bucs a 60-55 lead. Lance Kearse scored a layup with 43.5 seconds remaining to pull the Tritons within three points. The Tritons elected to play for a stop and not foul, and Dennis' three-pointer with 10 seconds remaining missed.
After the Bucs fouled with three seconds remaining to break up the play, Eckerd inbounded the ball to Kearse, whose attempt at a game-tying three-pointer from the right wing missed as time expired.
Warner scored his 33 points on 14-of-23 shooting overall, including 2-of-3 from three-point range. He scored 16 in the first half and 17 after the intermission, adding seven rebounds and four assists as he played 35 minutes. McArthy scored 12 on 4-of-7 shooting from three-point range, including 3-of-3 in the second half. Dennis added six points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two blocks.
Kearse led the Tritons with 23 points, while Walade Wade and Darrien Mack added eight each.
The Bucs shot 45.1 percent (23-of-51) for the game to the Tritons' 43.1 percent (22-of-51). The Bucs out-shot Eckerd in the second half 56.5 percent (13-of-23) to 34.6 percent (9-of-26). Eckerd out-rebounded the Bucs 30-28, but CBU forced eight turnovers while committing seven.
With their 25th victory, this year's team matches the school record set by the 1984-85 team (25-10) and the 2008-09 team (25-7).
The Bucs advance to the regional championship game Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m., where they will face the winner of tonight's other semifinal between No. 2 Alabama-Huntsville and Florida Tech.
