Blazers Best Bucs' Bats in Sweep

Mac Cooley earned a hit in each game, but the Bucs dropped a doubleheader at Valdosta State Saturday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 VALDOSTA, Ga.—Four Valdosta State pitchers held the Christian Brothers University Bucs to two runs on seven hits as the host Blazers swept a Gulf South Conference doubleheader from the Bucs Saturday, winning the opener 7-0 before claiming a 12-2 win in the nightcap.

In the opener, the Blazers (12-7, 4-1 GSC) scored the only run they would need in the bottom of the first on a hit batter, a double, and a sacrifice fly.  VSU starter Kevin Rogers (1-2) held the Bucs (6-16, 0-8) scoreless on just two hits in his eight innings.  Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) broke up the no-hit bid in the fourth with a two-out single to left, and Cody Warren (Orlando, Fla./Orangewood Christian HS) reached on a sixth-inning single.  The Bucs also drew three walks but were unable to capitalize.

The Blazers gave Rogers more run support in the fourth and fifth innings.  In the fourth, two singles, a hit batter, and an error pushed a run across, and in the fifth, the Blazers scored four runs, all with one out, on three hits, two unsuccessful fielder's choices, an error, and a hit batter.  They tacked on a final run in the eighth on a double, passed ball, and sacrifice fly to set the final margin.

In game two, the Blazers scored in five of six innings as they pulled away quickly.  They scored three in each of the first, second, and sixth innings, two in the fourth, and one in the third.  The Bucs' offense broke through in the sixth inning, scoring twice.  Hunter Parham (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) led the inning off by being hit by a pitch, and Cooley followed with a single.  Brent Ariemma (Bartlett, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) drove in Parham with a single, and a Charles Armour (Brighton, Tenn./Brighton HS) sacrifice fly brought Cooley home.

Jimmy Franklin (Knoxville, Tenn./Powell HS) collected two hits in the game for the Bucs, who had five singles in the game.

The Bucs and Blazers meet again Sunday afternoon at noon Central time.  The Bucs' next home game is next Saturday at noon when they host defending national champion West Florida.
