Box Score 2 MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Bucs used four RBI's from junior first baseman
Hunter Parham (Southaven, Miss., Southaven HS) and a three-hitter from sophomore pitcher
Alex Sikes (Cordova, Tenn., Cordova HS) to claim a 6-1 upset over No. 6 West Florida in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader after the defending national champions won the first game 18-5.
In the second game, the Argos (21-8, 3-4 GSC) scored in the top of the first when Dustin Saulmon continued a monster day with a leadoff double. He moved to third on a flyout, and he scored on a successful first-and-third double steal. Sikes wouldn't allow the Argos to have two runners on base at the same time the rest of the game, as he held UWF to three hits, three walks, and a hit batter in the seven-inning complete game. He struck out nine.
Parham gave Sikes all the run support he would need in the bottom of the first. A single and a walk put runners on first and second with one out, when Parham crushed a 3-2 pitch into the parking lot beyond the left-field fence to give the Bucs a 3-1 lead. He had a hand in extending the lead in the fifth, when the Bucs scored three more. Singles by
Hunter Frey (Paris, Tenn./Henry County HS),
Cody Warren (Orlando, Fla./Orangewood Christian HS), and
Josh Hopkins (Olive Branch, Miss./Southern Baptist Educational Center) loaded the bases with one out for Parham. Parham blasted a long sacrifice fly to center to score Frey, and a
Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) double and a fielding error combined to bring Warren and Hopkins in to set the final margin.
Sikes cruised down the stretch, retiring the last eight batters he faced, five by strikeout.
Warren, Frey, and
Seth Cline (Cottontown, Tenn./Portland HS) collected two hits each for the Bucs. Hopkins scored twice, and Parham collected four RBI.
The Argos rapped out 24 hits in the opener, scoring at least one run in six of the game's eight innnings. Salmon was the key to the Argos' offense, scoring four runs as he went 6-for-7 with two doubles. For the day as a whole, he went 8-for-10 with four doubles.
After UWF scored twice in the top of the first, the Bucs took an early lead with three in the bottom of the inning.
Jimmy Franklin (Knoxville, Tenn./Powell HS) reached on an error, and singles from Hopkins and
Braden Keathley (Henderson, Nev./Silverado HS) brought him in. A two-out
Alan Wright (Olive Branch, Miss./DeSoto Central HS) double scored Hopkins and Keathley.
The Argos took the lead again for good with two in the second and added one in the fourth and four in the fifth before the Bucs scored again in the bottom of the fifth. Franklin hit a leadoff double to right and moved to third on a wild pitch. After Hopkins drew a walk, Keathley hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Franklin. After a single and an error, a
Charles Kelly (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) sac fly brought Hopkins home.
After a scoreless sixth, the Argos batted around in the seventh and eighth, scoring four in the seventh and five in the eighth to set the final margin.
Parham collected two hits in the game for the Bucs, and Franklin and Hopkins scored twice. Wright added two RBI.
The game two win was the Bucs' first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since a Feb. 17, 2007 win over then-No. 10 Central Missouri, snapping a streak of 28 straight losses to ranked opponents.
The Bucs and the Argos meet again tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. in the rubber game of the three-game series.
