Box Score MEMPHIS—Visiting Rhodes scored a run in each of the last two innings to spoil a comeback by the Christian Brothers University Bucs and claim a 7-5 win in the Bucs' final non-conference home game of the season.
The Bucs (11-28) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, when
Jimmy Franklin (Knoxville, Tenn./Powell HS) walked, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a
Josh Hopkins (Olive Branch, Miss./Southern Baptist Educational Center) groundout. Starter
Will Bishop (Huntsville, Ala./Grissom HS) sailed through the first three innings, facing the minimum, but he ran into trouble in the fourth. A pair of walks and a wild pitch started the inning, and a pair of singles to left put the Lynx (23-13) ahead 2-1. Another single and a double pushed the lead to 5-1 before Bishop could escape the inning.
The Bucs shaved a run off the lead in the sixth inning, when
Cody Warren (Orlando, Fla./Orangewood Christian HS) reached on an error and later scored on a groundout. They drew even in the seventh inning.
Tyler Dunn (Bartlett, Tenn./Tipton-Rosemark Academy) sparked the rally with a one-out single up the middle.
Jimmy Franklin (Knoxville, Tenn./Powell HS) followed with a single, and Warren laid down a perfect bunt single up the third-base line. The throw to first was wild, allowing Dunn and Franklin to score and sending Warren to second.
Braden Keathley (Henderson, Nev./Silverado HS) doubled Warren in, but the Bucs left the bases loaded with the game tied.
The Lynx took the lead for good in the top of the eighth after Lynden Pindling led the inning off by reaching on a wild pitch on strike three. He stole second and later scored on a two-out wild pitch. They added another run in the ninth with a successful first-and-third double-steal to set the final margin. The Bucs mustered a pair of singles in the ninth, but a pair of flyouts ended the game.
Warren went 3-for-5 with two runs, and Dunn was 3-for-4.
Jake Porter (Mount Juliet, Tenn./Mount Juliet HS) tossed two scoreless innings of relief, and
Michael Lartigue (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) added another scoreless frame out of the bullpen.
The Bucs wrap up their home schedule this weekend when they welcome No. 17 Delta State to Buc Field for a three-game set. Saturday's doubleheader begins at noon, with a single game set for Senior Day Sunday at 1 p.m.
