Box Score 2 MEMPHIS—No. 17 Delta State swept a doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Bucs Saturday afternoon, winning the first game 9-3 before holding off the Bucs 4-0 in game two.
In the opener, the Statesmen (29-11, 13-7 GSC) scored all the runs they would need before they recorded the first out of the game. Jordan Chovanec led the game off with a homer to right-center. Sam Kidd followed with a single to left, and Michael Vinson blasted a two-run homer to center. After a walk, Ben Kingsley hit another homer, giving DSU a commanding 5-0 edge.
The Bucs (11-30, 3-17) began to claw back into the game in the fourth inning.
Josh Hopkins (Olive Branch, Miss./Southern Baptist Educational Center) reached on an error to start the gmae, and
Braden Keathley (Henderson, Nev./Silverado HS) followed with a double to right.
Alan Wright (Olive Branch, Miss./DeSoto Central HS) hit an RBI single, and
Charles Kelly (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) hit a sacrifice fly to pull the Bucs within 5-2. In the fifth,
Jimmy Franklin (Knoxville, Tenn./Powell HS) scored on a Hopkins RBI single, but the Bucs would come no closer.
Vinson hit another two-run homer to center in the seventh, and a two-run double by Brent Langston in the eighth inning set the final margin.
Hopkins, Keathley, and Wright collected two hits each for the Bucs in the game.
In the second game, the Statesmen broke up a scoreless tie in the fifth when Tyler Aldridge singled, advanced to third on an error, and scored on a Chovanec bunt single. The Statesmen tacked on three more in the sixth on a walk, a hit batter, and two hits to set the final margin.
DSU starter Colton Mitchell (6-0) blanked the Bucs on two singles and four walks.
The Bucs and Statesmen meet again for Senior Day Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
