Box Score 2 MEMPHIS-No. 2 Delta State scored 33 runs on 33 hits as they swept a Gulf South Conference doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Bucs Saturday afternoon at Buc Field, winning the opener 14-2 and the second game 19-2.
The Statesmen (19-4, 6-2 GSC) exploded for five runs in the second inning to take the lead in the first game. They tacked on three in the fourth and six in the fifth to take a huge lead.
The Bucs (6-16, 0-8) scored their first run of the day in the sixth inning when
Jarrett Jenkins (Ridgeland, Miss./Ridgeland HS) doubled up the middle and scored on a two-out
Charles Kelly (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) single.
Will Wilson (Cordova, Tenn./First Assembly Christian School) hit a leadoff homer in the seventh to set the final score.
Jake Porter (Mount Juliet, Tenn./Mount Juliet HS) shut DSU out for two and a third innings of relief.
In the second game, each team scored twice in the second inning. The Statesmen used three hits to score twice in the top of the inning, while the Bucs scored two runs on an error in the bottom of the inning.
Braden Keathley (Henderson, Nev./Silverado HS) singled to start the inning, and Kelly was hit by a pitch. A wild pitch moved the runners up to second and third, and a two-base throwing error on a failed pickoff brought them in.
The Statesmen blew it open in the middle of the game, scoring six in the fourth, five in the fifth, and six in the sixth to set the final margin.
The Bucs and Statesmen meet again Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
