Box Score MEMPHIS-No. 2 Delta State jumped to a 5-1 lead after two innings on their way to a 9-4 win over the Christian Brothers University Bucs Sunday afternoon at Buc Field.
The Statesmen (20-4, 7-2 GSC) used three walks, a single, a wild pitch, and a passed ball to plate three runs in the top of the first inning. The Bucs (6-17, 0-9) scored once in the bottom of the inning after
Jarrett Jenkins (Ridgeland, Miss./Ridgeland HS) singled to left. After a wild pitch moved him to second,
Tyler Burnett (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) singled to center, sending Jenkins to third. Burnett was picked off first for the first out, but he stayed alive in a rundown long enough for Jenkins to score from third.
DSU tacked on two more in the second on a single, a double, and a single. They added single tallies in the fourth, fifth, eighth, and ninth innings as well. The Bucs rallied in the bottom of the eighth, trailing 8-1.
Cale Alexander (Bartlett, Tenn./Tipton-Rosemark Academy) singled to center, and a pair of walks loaded the bases. A Jenkins groundout scored one run, and a Burnett single scored two to pull the Bucs within an 8-4 margin, but DSU reliever Garrett Pickens put the fire out by retiring all four batters he faced to finish off the victory for DSU.
Burnett went 3-for-4 for the Bucs with two RBI, while Jenkins, Alexander, and
Will Wilson (Cordova, Tenn./First Assembly Christian School) collected two hits each.
The Bucs return to action Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m., when they host LeMoyne-Owen. The Bucs hit the road next weekend to visit West Alabama for a GSC series.
