Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga.-Host West Georgia scored two runs in the sixth inning to break open a tie game in a 5-3 win over the Christian Brothers University Bucs on a frigid day in the Gulf South Conference opener for both schools.
The Bucs (4-9, 0-1 GSC) opened the scoring in the second inning as
Tyler Burnett (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) singled, stole second, and came home on a
Charles Kelly (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) single to right.
The Wolves (11-4, 1-0 GSC) answered with three runs on five singles in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. The Bucs equalized with a pair of runs in the fourth inning.
Braden Keathley (Henderson, Nev./Silverado HS) started the inning with a walk, and
Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) followed with a single. Burnett followed with a sacrifice bunt, and a wild pitch on ball four to Kelly scored Keathley and sent Cooley to third. A
Caleb Goodwin (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) sacrifice fly to left tied the game at three, scoring Cooley.
The Wolves' pitching settled down from there, retiring 17 of the final 18 CBU batters. The Wolves took the lead for good in the sixth inning as they converted four singles into a pair of runs.
Michael Lartigue (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) tossed two and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief for the Bucs, lowering his season ERA to 0.79. Five Bucs collected one hit each in the game.
Saturday's originally scheduled second game was postponed to Sunday due to the cold weather, with the temperature never rising past 35 degrees. Sunday's doubleheader will begin at 11 a.m. with a nine-inning game, with the seven-inning game set to follow. The Bucs' next home game is set for Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. against Central Baptist.
