Box Score ROME, Ga.–Two Christian Brothers University pitchers combined for the Bucs' first shutout of the season and their first Gulf South Conference shutout since 2007 as the Bucs won 10-0 at Shorter Saturday afternoon.
After a scoreless first inning, the Bucs (7-23, 1-14 GSC) exploded for four runs in the top of the second.
Taylor Seaman (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) led off with a single, and
Ryan Knott (Cordova, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) singled him home.
Tyler Burnett (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) followed with a single, setting up a two-run triple by
Jarrett Jenkins (Ridgeland, Miss./Ridgeland HS).
Charles Kelly (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) singled Jenkins home, and the Bucs led 4-0.
Will Wilson (Cordova, Tenn./First Assembly Christian School) singled to lead off the third and scored on an RBI single by Knott to extend the Bucs' lead to 5-0.
CBU blew it open in the fourth, when they batted around. Jenkins worked a leadoff walk, and Kelly doubled him in. After another walk, Wilson hit an RBI double, and Seaman followed with an RBI single of his own. Knott drove in another run when he grounded into a force play to set the final margin at 10-0.
Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) went five and two-thirds innings for the Bucs, holding the Hawks (12-19, 7-6) scoreless on four hits and five walks.
Dakota Roden (Selmer, Tenn./McNairy Central HS) retired all four batters he faced after relieving Cooley in the sixth inning.
Kelly went 4-for-4 for the Bucs with two RBI. Jenkins, Wilson, Seaman, Knott, and Burnett each went 2-for-4, with Jenkins, Wilson, and Seaman scoring twice. Knott drove in three runs, and Jenkins added two RBI.
The shutout was the Bucs' first since Feb. 26, 2011, when CBU lefty Lee Paine shut out Northwestern Ohio 5-0. The Bucs' last shutout win in GSC play was March 17, 2007, when Charlie Soukup tossed a seven-hit shutout in a 10-0 win over Arkansas-Monticello.
The Bucs visit LeMoyne-Owen Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. before coming home next weekend to face Valdosta State, with Saturday's doubleheader set for a noon start.
