Bucs Rally Past Lions 9-7

Mac Cooley went 3-for-5 with two runs in the Bucs' 9-7 win over Edgewood Thursday afternoon.
Box Score MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Bucs scored five runs in the seventh and eighth innings to rally for a 9-7 win over visiting Edgewood Thursday afternoon at Buc Field.

The Eagles (1-4) opened the scoring in the second inning as they scored twice on three walks, a wild pitch, and a groundout. They added another in the third on two singles, and they appeared to blow it open in the fourth inning with three runs on a walk, an error, a hit batter, a double, and two sacrifice flies.

The Bucs (5-10) began their comeback in the bottom of the fourth inning, plating four runs as they batted around. Three straight singles by Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS), Braden Keathley (Henderson, Nev./Silverado HS), and Josh Hopkins (Olive Branch, Miss./Southern Baptist Educational Center) loaded the bases with none out. A Caleb Goodwin (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) sacrifice fly brought one run in, and an error allowed two more to score. After a walk, another error brought the Bucs within a 6-4 margin.

The Eagles tacked on another run in the top of the seventh on a double, a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly. The Bucs shaved the deficit to one run in the bottom of the seventh when they scored two runs on a Tyler Burnett (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) walk, a Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) single, an error, and a Hopkins sacrifice fly, but they ended the inning still trailing 7-6.

A big two-out rally saved the Bucs in the eighth. Cale Alexander (Bartlett, Tenn./Tipton-Rosemark Academy) singled with one out, and Tanner Sandel (Gallatin, Tenn./Gallatin HS) sacrificed him to second. Jarrett Jenkins (Ridgeland, Miss./Ridgeland HS) singled him home and moved to second on the throw. Burnett scored Jenkins with a double to left to put the Bucs on top for the first time, and Cooley capped the scoring with another double to score Burnett.

Jack Parker (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) pitched around a bases-loaded one-out jam to earn his first save. Josh Trevino (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) tossed an inning and a third of scoreless relief, and Drew Tatum (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) and Miles Anderson (Milan, Tenn./Milan HS) each threw a scoreless inning. Anderson (1-0) earned the win.

Cooley went 3-for-5 with two runs, and Jenkins was 3-for-4. Burnett scored twice.

The Bucs return to action Saturday at noon as they host Alabama-Huntsville for a GSC doubleheader.
