Box Score MEMPHIS–The Christian Brothers University Bucs scored three runs in the first inning to take an early lead, but Bethel rallied for a 9-5 win Tuesday afternoon in the Bucs' final non-conference home game of the season.
The Bucs (9-29) wasted no time scoring in the bottom of the first inning.
Caleb Goodwin (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) led off with a single and moved to third on a
Ryan Knott (Cordova, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) double.
Charles Kelly (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) followed with a towering three-run homer down the left field line, giving the Bucs a 3-0 lead.
The Wildcats (23-12) broke through in the sixth inning with a leadoff homer by Lance Jarreld. They tied the game with two runs in the seventh with two runs on a two-out rally featuring three singles and an error. They took the lead in the eighth with a two-run homer by Martin Key.
Bethel built their lead to 9-3 in the ninth, scoring four runs as they sent 10 batters to the plate on four singles, two hit batters, and a two-run Tyler Murphy homer.
The Bucs rallied in the bottom of the ninth, scoring twice. Walks to pinch-hitters
Matt Turner (Logansport, Ind./Logansport HS) and
Charles Armour (Brighton, Tenn./Brighton HS) sandwiched a
Jordan Wilson (Arlington, Tenn./Tipton-Rosemark Academy) single, loading the bases with no outs.
Caleb Goodwin (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) drew a bases-loaded walk to score the first run, and a wild pitch plated a second run before Bethel reliever Keaton Gregory used two strikeouts and a groundout to end the threat.
Kelly finished the game 2-for-5. Starter
Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) tossed three scoreless innings with four strikeouts and two hits allowed, and reliever
Dakota Roden (Selmer, Tenn./McNairy Central HS) also threw a scoreless frame.
Patrick Gurley (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic HS) allowed one run on three hits over two innings of relief.
The Bucs return to action this weekend as they wrap up their home schedule against North Alabama. Saturday's doubleheader starts at noon, with a single game set for 1 p.m. Sunday. CBU begins the weekend festivities with the Pirate Golf Tournament Friday at 1 p.m. at The Links at Audobon Park. Senior Day festivites are scheduled for Sunday's game, including presentation of the "Coach Nate Award" and a ceremonial first pitch by CBU's President, Dr. John Smarrelli, Jr.
