Box Score 2 MEMPHIS–Visiting Valdosta State swept a doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Bucs Saturday afternoon, winning the opener 14-4 before edging the Bucs 3-1 in the second game.
In the opener, the Blazers (18-12, 7-7 GSC) scored 10 runs in the final two innings to blow open what had been a close game. VSU scored first in the top of the third inning when they plated two runs on five hits, all singles. The Bucs answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Jordan Wilson (Arlington, Tenn./Tipton-Rosemark Academy) started the rally with a one-out single up the middle, and
Will Wilson (Cordova, Tenn./First Assembly Christian School) followed with a single to right. An infield single by
Taylor Seaman (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) loaded the bases with one out.
Josh Ambuehl (Las Vegas, Nev./Arlington HS) followed with a two-run double to left-center, but Seaman was tagged out at the plate trying to score a third run. Ambuehl scored on a two-out error to give CBU (8-25, 1-16) a 3-2 edge.
The Blazers tied the game with a run on three hits in the top of the fifth inning, and they took the lead for good in the top of the sixth with a run on a walk and two singles. They added three more to the lead in the top of the seventh on a three-run double by Matthew Fears. VSU put it out of reach in the top of the eighth with seven unearned runs on five singles, a double, a hit batter, and a pair of errors.
The Bucs scored one run in the bottom of the eighth to set the final margin as Jordan Wilson was hit by a pitch and pinch-runner
Tanner Sandel (Gallatin, Tenn./Gallatin HS) scored on singles by Will Wilson and Ambuehl.
Ambuehl went 3-for-4 in the game with three RBI. Seaman and Will Wilson each went 2-for-4.
The second game was a pitchers' duel throughout. The Blazers struck first in the second inning when the Bucs committed a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt with two runners on. Ambuehl gave the Bucs an answer in the bottom of the third when he doubled and scored on a pair of wild pitches.
The game remained tied at 1 until the top of the fifth, when the Blazers used a single, a sacrifice bunt, a stolen base, and a passed ball to plate what proved to be the winning run. VSU tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh with a two-out rally, using a walk and a double to set the final margin.
Meanwhile, VSU starter Nick Fogarty kept the Bucs off-balance, only allowing two baserunners against 11 strikeouts. In addition to Ambuehl's double,
Tyler Burnett (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) singled in the sixth.
Miles Anderson (Milan, Tenn./Milan HS) took the hard-luck loss for the Bucs, allowing two runs, both unearned, on six hits and a walk over five innings.
Jack Parker (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) allowed a run on one hit and two walks against three strikeouts in two innings of relief.
The Bucs and Blazers meet again Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. for the final game of the series.
