Box Score CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.–Fourth-seeded North Alabama eliminated the Christian Brothers University Bucs from the Taziki's Gulf South Conference Tournament Friday afternoon, defeating the Bucs 10-5 in the second round at AT&T Field.
The Lions (28-20-1) opened the scoring with a three-run first inning on three singles and a double.
The Bucs (9-37) scratched across a run in the bottom of the inning. After
Jarrett Jenkins (Ridgeland, Miss./Ridgeland HS) reached on a leadoff error,
Ryan Knott (Cordova, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) grounded into a force play, with Jenkins out at second.
Charles Kelly (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) singled, and after Knott moved to third on a wild pitch,
Josh Ambuehl (Las Vegas, Nev./Arlington HS) singled to left to cut the deficit to 3-1.
UNA tacked on two more in the second inning on two singles and an error. The Bucs again cashed in on an error.
Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) reached on an error and came home on a two-out RBI double by Jenkins.
UNA used a double, a sacrifice bunt, and a sacrifice fly to score again in the third inning to extend their lead to 6-2. The Bucs answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth.
Caleb Goodwin (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) doubled to left and scored when Knott singled to right with two out.
The Lions added a run in the fifth on a walk and a double, and they blew it open in the sixth with three two-out runs on four singles, a hit batter, and a wild pitch to extend their lead to 10-3.
The Bucs shaved two runs off the final margin in the bottom of the ninth. Knott led off with an infield single. He moved to third on a pair of wild pitches before scoring on a groundout by Kelly. Ambuehl hit a one-out infield single. Pinch-runner
Taylor Seaman (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) came around to score on back-to-back singles by
Will Wilson (Cordova, Tenn./First Assembly Christian School) and
Tyler Burnett (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS).
Jake Porter (Mount Juliet, Tenn./Mount Juliet HS) tossed three and a third scoreless innings of relief, scattering four hits. Ambuehl went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Knott was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Kelly, Wilson, and Burnett each went 2-for-5, with Kelly and Burnett each driving in a run.
