Bucs Can't Hold Early Lead, Lose 7-3 to Owls

Miles Anderson threw three scoreless innings, but the Bucs dropped a 7-3 decision to William Woods Thursday afternoon.
Box Score MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Bucs built a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but visiting William Woods tied the game in the sixth inning and scored four runs in the eighth to claim a 7-3 win Thursday afternoon at Nadicksbernd Field.

The Bucs (0-3) plated all three of their runs in the bottom of the first inning. Consecutive walks to Taylor Seaman (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS), Josh Hopkins (Olive Branch, Miss./Southern Baptist Educational Center) and Charles Kelly (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) loaded the bases with one out. Justin Neal (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) followed with a two-run single to center, and Casey Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) blasted a long double down the left field line to score Kelly, but Neal was tagged out trying to score from first to end the inning.

The Owls (1-0) scored their first run in the top of the fifth inning, loading the bases on three walks and scoring on a fielder's choice. An inning later, they scored twice to tie the game, loading the bases on three singles and using a sacrifice fly and a single to bring in the tying run.

The game stayed 3-3 until the top of the eighth, when the Owls broke through with one out. Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases, and an error followed by three singles brought in four runs to set the final margin.

Tyler Burnett (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) and Goodwin collected two hits each in the game for CBU. Miles Anderson (Milan, Tenn./Milan HS) tossed three scoreless innings in his first start of the season, allowing one hit and two walks with three strikeouts.

James Ball earned the win for the Owls, tossing five scoreless innings of relief as he allowed just two hits against four strikeouts. Matt Thomas and Nick Spagnola had two hits each for WWU.

The Bucs return to action Saturday at noon as they host Alderson-Broaddus for a doubleheader. The field dedication ceremony for Nadicksbernd Field is set for 11:30 a.m. Saturday before the game.
