Bucs Blank Battlers Back-To-Back

Jack Parker threw six scoreless innings, allowing just two hits as the Bucs posted back-to-back shutouts against Alderson-Broaddus Sunday afternoon.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MEMPHIS-For the first time in 16 years, the Christian Brothers University Bucs tossed back-to-back shutouts to sweep a doubleheader, beating Alderson-Broaddus 2-0 and 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Nadicksbernd Field.

In Sunday's opener, starting pitcher Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) pitched around a couple of early jams, recording two outs on the bases in the first inning and inducing a double play in the third inning to escape unharmed despite two errors. But the Bucs (2-3) were also unable to solve ABU (1-2) starter Chris Boatto. CBU left the bases loaded in the bottom of the first and stranded runners on second and third in the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, however, they finally broke through. Tyler Burnett (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) led off with a single to left-center, but he was erased on a fielder's choice on a failed sacrifice attempt by Taylor Seaman (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS). Josh Hopkins (Olive Branch, Miss./Southern Baptist Educational Center) followed with a single, and Justin Neal (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) sacrificed them to second and third. Charles Kelly (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) followed with a two-run single through the left side to give the Bucs all the offense they would need.

Peyton Sanderlin (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) picked up the win, tossing four scoreless innings as he allowed just three baserunners, two on singles and a hit batter. Despite putting two runners on base in the seventh, he induced a game-ending double play to pick up his first victory. Hopkins went 2-for-2 in the game, and Kelly drove in two runs.

In the second game, Jack Parker (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) and Jake Porter (Mount Juliet, Tenn./Mount Juliet HS) combined for a two-hit shutout in the Bucs' first 1-0 victory since 2006.

The Bucs scored their only run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Hopkins reached on a one-out error and stole second, coming around to score on a single up the middle from Kelly.

After allowing only four baserunners over the first five innings, Parker had to pitch out of trouble in the sixth, as he issued two walks. But he struck out ABU's Cody Cowart to end the inning, and Porter picked up his first save with a popout and two groundouts around a two-out walk.

For the game, Parker tossed six shutout innings on two hits and four walks against three strikeouts. Kelly went 2-for-2 in the game.

The Bucs' last 1-0 win came April 22, 2006, against Freed-Hardeman. They hadn't spun back-to-back shutouts since April 3-4, 2004, against Ouachita Baptist. And they hadn't posted shutouts in both games of a doubleheader since Feb. 15, 1998, against Lincoln.

The Bucs' final tune-up before beginning GSC play is set for Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. as they host Victory. They open GSC play at Shorter this weekend, with Saturday's doubleheader set for 11 a.m., followed by a noon single game Sunday.
