Box Score MEMPHIS-After struggling to score in their first five games, the Christian Brothers University Bucs broke out for nine runs on 14 hits as they won 9-1 over Victory Wednesday afternoon at Nadicksbernd Field.
The Eagles (0-4) struck first in the top of the second inning, loading the bases on an error, a single and a walk. A single brought a run home, but CBU outfielders
Taylor Seaman (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) and
Justin Neal (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) each threw out a runner at the plate to limit Victory to one run in the inning.
The Bucs took the lead back in the bottom of the inning. After back-to-back walks to
Charles Kelly (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) and
Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS),
Casey Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) grounded out to move them to second and third.
Mickey Smith (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) hit a two-run single to right-center to give the Bucs a 2-1 lead.
Smith's single was the Bucs' only hit until the sixth inning, when Neal hit a leadoff double to spark a four-run inning. Kelly drew a walk, and Cooley singled to load the bases with one out. Goodwin followed with a two-run single, and
Caleb Goodwin (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) hit a two-run single of his own t extend the Bucs' lead to 6-1.
CBU added three more in the seventh inning.
Josh Hopkins (Olive Branch, Miss./Southern Baptist Educational Center) hit a leadoff single, and Kelly singled with one out. Cooley hit an RBI double down the left field line, and Casey Goodwin hit another two-run single up the middle t set the final margin at 9-1.
Casey Goodwin went 3-for-5 with four runs, and Cooley was 3-for-4 with three runs. Hopkins and Neal each went 2-for-5, with Kelly scoring twice. Smith and Caleb Goodwin drove in two runs each.
Michael Spain (Huron, Tenn./Lexington HS) earned the win, tossing five and two-thirds scoreless innings of relief, allowing two hits and a walk against four strikeouts.
Bill Higdon (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) threw a scoreless ninth, with two strikeouts, a walk and a hit.
Miles Anderson (Milan, Tenn./Milan HS) started and went two and a third innings, allowing one unearned run on seven hits and a walk, striking out one.
The Bucs open GSC play Saturday at 11 a.m. as they visit Shorter for a doubleheader. They play a single game Sunday at noon. CBU's next home game is against Calumet-St. Joseph Wed., Feb. 26 at 1 p.m.
