MEMPHIS-Christian Brothers University junior guard
Trey Casey (Cincinnati, Ohio, La Salle HS) has been named the school's first Capital One First Team Academic All-American in more than a decade.
Casey, who carries a perfect 4.0 GPA, is second in the GSC in scoring at 19.0 ppg, and he leads the GSC with 2.1 steals per game. A Preseason All-GSC selection this year, Casey was the GSC Tournament Most Outstanding Player as a sophomore last year, leading the Bucs to the GSC Championship. He is a two-time GSC Player of the Week this season as well.
Casey is CBU's first First Team Academic All-American since 2003, when Jennifer Kett earned the honor in women's soccer. CBU also placed Jenny Barnard as a Second Team Academic All-American in 2006 in softball, and John Raymond Hehn earned Third Team Academic All-America honors in 2006 in baseball.
To be eligible for the Capital One Academic All-America program, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA. Freshmen and first-year transfers are ineligible. All-District winners from the eight districts advance to the national ballot, where a committee of the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA) selects the winners.
Casey and the Bucs return to action tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. as they visit North Alabama.
