Hawks Sweep Bucs 4-1, 3-0

Jake Porter threw two scoreless innings, but the Bucs dropped a 4-1, 3-0 doubleheader Saturday at Shorter.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ROME, Ga.-For 18 innings Saturday afternoon, the Christian Brothers University Bucs held host Shorter to one run. But the Hawks scored three runs in the first inning of the day and three in the final inning of the day, the 10th inning of the seven-inning game, to sweep a doubleheader from the Bucs 4-1 and 3-0.

In the first game, the Hawks (3-9, 2-3 GSC) plated three runs on a walk, two singles and a double. The Bucs (3-6, 0-2) cut a run off the deficit in the second inning as Justin Neal (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) singled to left, moved to second on a groundout, stole third and scored on a Casey Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) RBI single.

The Hawks tacked on another run in the seventh on a pair of singles and a sacrifice bunt to set the final margin.

Goodwin went 2-for-4 for the Bucs. Colton Cross (2-1) went the distance for Shorter, holding the Bucs to one run on five hits with no walks.

Jake Garbuzinski (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) took the loss for the Bucs, allowing four runs on 10 hits and two walks. Michael Lartigue (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) tossed a perfect eighth inning in relief.

In game two, both teams' pitchers sizzled throughout. Jack Parker (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) shut the Hawks out on four hits and three walks over the first four innings, and Jake Porter (Mount Juliet, Tenn./Mount Juliet HS) followed with two scoreless innings on one hit and one walk. Justin Machado countered for the Hawks, blanking the Bucs on three hits over seven innings before yielding to Christian Champion, who spun three more scoreless frames, pitching around a Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) single in the top of the 10th.

Peyton Sanderlin (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) continued the Bucs' strong pitching, throwing three scoreless innings on two hits and a walk, but the Hawks won the game in the bottom of the 10th when Bryan Mathews hit a three-run walk-off homer with two out after a double and a walk had set the stage for the homer.

Neal went 2-for-4 for the Bucs.

The Bucs and Hawks meet again tomorrow at noon for the final game of the series. The Bucs' next home game is Wednesday at 1 p.m. as they host Calumet-St. Joseph.
