Errors Sink Bucs in Extra Innings

Riley Kilgore went 3-for-4 in the Bucs' 5-4 extra-inning loss at Shorter Sunday afternoon.
Box Score ROME, Ga.-For the second straight game, host Shorter scored in the bottom of the 10th inning to edge the Christian Brothers University Bucs Sunday, winning 5-4 Sunday afternoon on a two-out throwing error.

The Bucs (3-7, 0-3 GSC) never trailed until the game's final play. They struck first in the top of the third inning as Taylor Seaman (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) walked, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a Josh Hopkins (Olive Branch, Miss./Southern Baptist Educational Center) single. They extended their lead to 3-0 an inning later. They loaded the bases with none out on singles by Josh Ambuehl (Las Vegas, Nev./Arlington HS) and Riley Kilgore (Cordova, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) and a walk to Caleb Goodwin (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy). Tyler Burnett (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) grounded into a force play to drive Ambuehl in, and Goodwin scored on a throwing error as the Hawks tried to pick off Burnett at first.

The Hawks (4-9, 3-3) answered with two in the bottom of the fourth on an error, a double and a single, and they tied the game at three in the sixth inning on a triple and a sacrifice fly.

The Bucs regained the lead in the top of the eighth by capitalizing on a pair of errors. Goodwin reached on a two-base error and scored from second when Burnett reached on an error. But the Bucs' 4-3 lead would be short-lived, as the Hawks tied it back up in the bottom of the inning on a walk, a sacrifice bunt and a double.

The game remained tied 4-4 until the bottom of the 10th inning. The Bucs threatened, with back-to-back one-out singles by Goodwin and Kilgore, but a pair of groundouts ended the inning. In the bottom of the inning, Ian Redetzky hit a leadoff single for the Hawks and moved to second on a wild pitch. The Bucs intentionally walked the next batter, Bryan Mathews, to set up a force at any base, and after a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third, the Bucs again issued an intentional walk to keep the double play in order. Shorter's Charlie Gillis hit a grounder to third baseman Charles Kelly (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS). He threw Redetzky out at home, but Kilgore's throw to first was wild, allowing Mathews to score the winning run.

Kilgore went 3-for-4 for the Bucs, while Goodwin scored two runs. Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) allowed three runs, two earned, over six innings. He allowed four hits and struck out seven with no walks. Bill Higdon (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) tossed an inning and two-thirds of scoreless relief with two strikeouts and two walks.

The Bucs come home Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. as they host Calumet-St. Joseph. They return to GSC play at home next weekend, hosting West Florida in a Saturday doubleheader at noon before completing the series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
