Bucs Down Crimson Wave 15-5

Tyler Burnett went 5-for-6 with three runs to lead the Bucs to a 15-5 win over Calumet-St. Joseph Thursday afternoon.
Box Score MEMPHIS-Led by a five-hit game from Tyler Burnett (Germantown, Tenn., Germantown HS), the Christian Brothers University Bucs rapped out season-highs of 18 hits, five doubles, 12 RBI and 15 runs as they cruised to a 15-5 win over Calumet College of St. Joseph Thursday afternoon at Nadicksbernd Field.

The Bucs (4-7) got on the board quickly. After back-to-back singles by Burnett and Casey Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS), Josh Hopkins (Olive Branch, Miss./Southern Baptist Educational Center) laid down a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third. Justin Neal (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) hit an RBI groundout to bring Burnett home.

The Bucs brought two more runs home in the third inning. Hopkins singled and Charles Kelly (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) was hit by a pitch with two out. Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) followed with an RBI single, and back-to-back walks to Mickey Smith (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) and Caleb Goodwin (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) brought Kelly in to give CBU a 3-0 edge.

The Crimson Wave (2-8-1) broke through for five runs in the top of the fourth inning on a walk, four singles and a triple as they took a 5-3 lead.

The lead would be short-lived, as the Bucs answered with four runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Burnett and Casey Goodwin again started the inning with back-to-back singles, and a wild pitch pushed them to third. Neal was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out, and Kelly doubled down the left field line to tie the game at five. A Cooley RBI single gave the Bucs a 6-5 lead, and Caleb Goodwin reached on a two-out error to bring in another run.

The Bucs extended their lead to 10-5 with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, taking full advantage of a pair of errors. Burnett led off with a single, and Casey Goodwin and Hopkins reached on errors to bring Burnett home. A bases-loaded Smith walk and a Caleb Goodwin RBI single gave them a 10-5 lead.

The Bucs tacked on three more in the sixth. Burnett led off with a double, and Hopkins doubled him home. Ryan Knott (Cordova, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) pinch-ran for Hopkins, scoring on a wild pitch. A Kelly single and a Cooley double pushed another run across, giving CBU a 13-5 lead. The Bucs ended the game with two more in the bottom of the seventh. Caleb Goodwin led off with a triple, scoring on a Burnett double. Casey Goodwin ended the game with a single to right, scoring Joe Mattson (Nashville, Tenn./Franklin Road Academy), who was hit by a pitch when he pinch hit after Caleb Goodwin's triple.

Burnett's five-hit effort was the Bucs' first since March 2007, when Mark Foster collected five hits at Arkansas-Monticello. Cooley went 4-for-4 with three RBI, and Casey Goodwin was 3-for-6. Caleb Goodwin, Kelly and Hopkins collected two hits each, with Kelly scoring four runs.

Taylor Seaman (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) earned the win in his first appearance on the hill this season. He went three and two thirds innings, allowing one run on three hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

The Bucs return to action tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. as they host No. 2 West Florida. They face UWF in a Saturday doubleheader to complete the series.
